Pope Francis has appointed His Eminence Jose Fuerte Cardinal Advincula as the 33rd Archbishop of Manila.
Jose Fuerte Advincula has been the Archbishop of Capiz since 2011 and as Cardinal since November 28, 2020. He was also appointed Cardinal-Priest and given the newly erected Titular Church of San Vigilio in Via Paolo Di Dono. On December 16, 2020, he was named a member of the Congregation for the Clergy.
Archbishop of Capiz
Prior to serving as Archbishop of Capiz, he served as Bishop of San Carlos for ten years, after being appointed on July 25, 2001 by Pope John Paul II.
Cardinal Advincula was born on March 30, 1952 in Dumalag, Capiz. He has a Philosophy degree from St. Pius X Seminary and also took up theology courses at the University of Santo Tomas.
He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Capiz on April 14, 1976.
He worked as Spiritual Director of the St. Pius X Seminary while also Professor and Dean of Studies. Later he studied psychology at the De La Salle University in Manila, canon law at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila.
He earned his licentiate in canon law at the Angelicum in Rome.
He worked at the seminary of Vigan, Nueva Segovia, and in the regional seminary of Jaro before becomingRector of the St. Pius X Seminary of Capiz in 1995. In 1999 he became parish priest of Santo Tomas de Vilanueva a Dao. He received his episcopal consecration on September 8, 2001.
Cardinal Advincula's motto is Audiam which means Listen.
